Jean-Michel Hostal

Photographer, ad man, designer, branding guru, graphic artist… Jean-Michel Hostal captures on film, collects, carves, assembles and transforms objects, symbols, daily routines and fashion myths. In China for the past 10 years, JMH continued his life time pursuit and exploration by identifying the items we take for granted with every day use and bringing them to life with his minimalist approach.

Guided early on by the hyperrealist painting school and by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol’s pop art, Jean-Michel Hostal’s creations reflect his personal style: nestled between painting and photography and making an inspired use of traditional techniques and digital imaging.

For the first time in his career, Jean-Michel Hostal brings together thirty of his works created between 1985 and 2012.

Chineses Stuff & Fashion Symbols

Chinese Stuff: Jean-Michel Hostal gives a second life to symbols of Chinese pop culture and everyday objects which go almost unnoticed by millions. Jean-Michel Hostal revives these objects in his signature minimalist style. His personal interpretation manages to reveal a beauty and aesthetic in seemingly simple design forms.

Fashion Symbols: All his life Jean-Michel Hostal has captured, refined and magnified these mythical fashion subjects. Now freed of any commercial or cosmetic considerations, Jean-Michel Hostal is now able to play with them in his own personal way and present them to you as they appear to him.
